Freeman Lifts Huskies Over Buffalo With Last Second FG

AMHERST, NY – UConn's Chris Freeman buried a 44-yard field goal with six seconds left to give the Huskies a 20-17 victory over the University at Buffalo at UB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Running back Cam Edwards scored a touchdown while rushing for 57 yards on 15 carries for the Huskies. Skyler Bell caught six receptions for 54 yards, including one touchdown. Joe Fagnano completed 19 of 31 passes for 155 yards and added a passing touchdown. Oumar Diomande led the defense with 10 tackles.
UConn took the lead over UB with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Fagnano to Bell at 8:36 in the second quarter. The Bulls quickly responded on their ensuing drive with a 63-yard touchdown run by Lamar Sperling at 6:21, leveling the score at 7–7 going into halftime.
The Huskies extended their lead with a scoring drive to open the third quarter, capped by an 8-yard touchdown run from Edwards at 11:16 to make it 14-7. Buffalo responded with a 39-yard field goal by Jack Howes at 4:58, narrowing the gap to 14-10. UConn's Freeman then added a 39-yard field goal of his own with 1:31 remaining, bringing the score to 17-10 to end the quarter.
Buffalo mounted a crucial drive in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, with Gunnar Gray finding AJ Henderson for a 5-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 59 seconds left, tying the score at 17–17. Fagnano quickly moved UConn into range on a 10-play drive, setting up the 44-yard chance. Freeman delivered, securing the win with a 44-yard field goal, clinching a 20–17 victory for the Huskies.
Buffalo's offense was bolstered by the efforts of Henderson, who carried the ball 24 times for 63 yards and added a receiving touchdown on three catches for 18 yards. Junior running back Lamar Sperling made a significant impact with 106 rushing yards on just nine carries, finding the end zone once. Senior quarterback Gunnar Gray completed 17 of 29 passes for 125 yards, throwing one touchdown without an interception.
On defense, senior linebacker Red Murdock was a standout, leading the team with nine total tackles and forcing a fumble. Defensive back Solomon Brown contributed solidly with six tackles, adding to the defensive effort.
Game Notes:
The Huskies extend their lead to 18-5 in the all-time series with Buffalo. First win at UB Stadium since 2011. UConn is now 2-0 against the Mid-American Conference this season and improve to 23-11 all-time against the league.
Huskies first scoring drive covered 93 yards and ended with Bell's 4th touchdown catch of the season. It marked the longest scoring drive of the season.
Cam Edwards third quarter touchdown run was his sixth of the season and his third-straight game with a touchdown. He has found the end zone in four of five games this season.
Running back Oliver Lundberg Coleman finished with career highs in carries, 5, and yards, 31, in the win.
Quarterback Joe Fagnano had the longest run of his career, a 38-yard jaunt in the third quarter. He finished with 64 yards on six carries, his highest total as a Husky.
Kicker Chris Freeman connected on a pair of field goals to make it seven-straight makes dating back to the Syracuse game.
