LOWELL, Mass. — UConn men's hockey defeated UMass Lowell by a final of 5-1 in the second game of a home and home series. Freshman Kam Hendrickson secured his first collegiate win while Joey Muldowney and Kaden Shahan both scored two goals.
The first period began with both teams playing fast and physical. The Huskies special teams were featured early as a penalty by freshman Carlin Dezainde put the Huskies on the penalty kill just three minutes into the game. With the man advantage, UMass Lowell capitalized, scoring the first goal of the evening on their first shot of the game. Later in the first period, Kaden Shahan collected a pass from Kai Janviriya and took it to the net beating the UMass Lowell netminder top shelf for the game tying goal. Neither team was able to find the back of the net again as they entered the period break tied at one.
The Huskies began the second period strong as they looked to take their first lead of the weekend series. Just six minutes into the period, the Huskies pressure and determination paid off as Jake Richard's initial shot attempt was saved but Joey Muldowney was in the right place at the right time for the tip in goal giving the Huskies the 2-1 lead. With the one goal lead, the Huskies defense and freshman Kam Hendrickson shined as they limited the Riverhawks offense and entered the break leading by one.
The third period was all UConn as the Huskies scored three goals to secure the 5-1 victory. The period began with both teams trading penalties. Despite the penalty kill having to kill off back-to-back penalties, the Huskies were able to keep the Riverhawks from finding the back of the net. Following the successful penalty kills, senior Ryan Tattle found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled offsides after an official review. Following the overturned goal, the Huskies defense left their mark, preventing UMass Lowell from cutting into the Huskies lead. With time running down in the game, UMass Lowell pulled their netminder in favor of an extra skater, but after a pestering forecheck by the Huskies, Jake Richard collected the puck and found Joey Muldowney for the empty net goal and his second of the night. On the ensuing faceoff, UMass Lowell pulled their goalie again, once again resulting in a UConn goal as Joey Muldowney fed Ryan Tattle giving UConn the 4-1 lead. The scoring didn't stop there as Kaden Shahan scored his second of the night, beating Austin Elliott top shelf for his second of the night securing the 5-1 win.
After allowing the first goal of the game, Kam Hendrickson shined, stopping the next 28 shots he faced.
