NEW HAVEN, Conn. — UConn men's hockey defeated Yale University by a final of 5–2 on Friday evening to secure their spot in the CT Ice Championship. Huskies scored two power play goals while going four-four on the penalty kill.
The Huskies started the game strong as Ryan Tattle carried the puck into the offensive zone and fired it towards goal, where Joey Muldowney was able to push the puck in for the Huskies first goal one minute into the start of the game. 20 seconds later, Ethan Whitcomb redirected a puck from Ethan Gardula for the Huskies second goal of the evening. The Huskies special teams were tested early as three penalties in the first period forced UConn to play a man down. Despite being a man down for a total of six minutes, the Huskies penalty kill successfully killed off all the penalties. Late in the first period Yale was able to cut into the Huskies lead as they beat Tyler Muszelik for their first goal of the night. Following the Yale goal, the Huskies defense locked in and prevented Yale from finding the equalizer in the first period.
In the second period, Yale was able to find the back of the net just two minutes into the period, tying the game at two. Later in the period following a Yale penalty, the Huskies power play went to work. The first power play unit didn't waste any time after winning the ensuing faceoff, Jake Richard found Ryan Tattle for the one-time goal, giving UConn the 3-2 lead. The Huskies didn't stop there as later in the first period another penalty gave UConn the man advantage and while on this power play Jake Richard fired home a one timer to give UConn the 4-2 lead entering the period break.
With the two-goal lead, the Huskies defense shined, preventing Yale from cutting into the UConn lead. With time running down in the third period, Yale pulled their goalie in favor of an extra skater. UConn's forecheck intensified late in the period and following a forced turnover, Mike Murtagh beat the Yale skaters down the ice and sealed the UConn win with an empty net goal. Senior goaltender Tyler Muszelik made 26 saves in the victory.
