FORT MYERS, Fla. – The UConn softball team dropped their opening two games at the Hampton Inn Gulf Coast Classic. The Huskies fell to Wisconsin, 3-0 in game one, followed by a loss to Buffalo, 6-3 in the second game of the doubleheader.
Game One
Freshman Caprice Bohmer (Ashburn, Va.) made her 5th start of the season in the circle in game one for the Huskies. Bohmer was dominant through her first four innings, striking out 8 of the first 15 batters she faced, and allowing just one hit.
The game was a pitcher's duel on both sides, with each team struggling to manufacture runs. Wisconsin earned the first hit of the game in the bottom of the 4th inning with a double, but Bohmer managed to strand the runner in scoring position.
Wisconsin broke the deadlock in the 5th inning, scoring three runs on three hits, giving the Badgers a 3-0 lead.
Graduate Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) came in on relief for Bohmer in the 6th inning, making her 7th appearance of the season for the Huskies. Walter tossed a scoreless frame, keeping the Huskies within striking distance.
UConn had multiple opportunities with multiple runners in scoring position but just could not find the key hit to push runs across the plate.
