Huskies Split Saturday Slate at the Gulf Coast Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The UConn softball team split their two matchups on day two of the Gulf Coast Classic on Saturday. The Huskies fell to Louisville in game one, 10-2 in five innings. UConn bounced back in game two, defeating Florida Gulf Coast, 4-3. The Huskies move to 3-10 overall this season.
Game One
Freshman Caprice Bohmer (Ashburn, Va.) made her 6th start of the season in game one for the Huskies. Bohmer went 2.2 innings giving up nine runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
Louisville jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning.
In the 3rd inning, freshman infielder Ava Calciano (Lewes, Del.) opened the scoring for the Huskies with an RBI triple to center field, scoring Savannah Ring (Wyckoff, N.J.) from first base, making it 4-1.
Louisville responded in the bottom half of the 3rd inning, scoring six runs to extend the Cardinals lead to 10-1.
Sophomore Stella Kiemele (St. Anthony, Minn.) came on in relief for Bohmer during the third inning, making her fourth appearance of the season. Kiemele faced just three batters giving up a run on one hit.
Sophomore Alexandra Bacher (Ridgefield, Conn.) relieved Kiemele in the 3rd inning, making her fifth appearance of the season. Bacher finished out the game in the circle for the Huskies, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up only one hit, adding a strikeout.
Freshman catcher Alexis Juhl (Waxhaw, N.C.) drove in UConn's second run of the game in the 5th inning with a groundout to second base, scoring Cat Petteys (Vestal, N.Y.). The Huskies continued to battle, but could not plate another run, ending the game in a five-inning run rule.

Game Two
Grad Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) got the ball in game two, making her fourth start of the season for the Huskies. Walter went 5.1 innings giving up two runs on six hits, adding a season high six strikeouts.
UConn jumped out to an early lead in the top of the 1st inning off the bat of Cat Petteys. The sophomore hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot to center field, putting the Huskies up 1-0.
Florida Gulf Coast responded with a run in the bottom half of the 1st inning, knotting the score at 1-1.
UConn re-gained the lead in the 3rd inning with a pair of runs to make it 3-1. Ava Calciano scored the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Savannah Ring from third base. Kaitlyn Breslin (Hopkinton, Mass.) followed Calciano with an RBI single to center field, scoring Petteys.
Florida Gulf Coast once again responded in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring a run to make it a one-run ball game, 3-2.
Petteys struck again in the 5th inning, hitting her second home run of the game, another solo shot, this one to left field, extending the Huskies lead to 4-2. This is Petteys second career multi-homer game.
Florida Gulf Coast trimmed into the UConn lead in the 6th inning, scoring a run to make it 4-3.
Sophomore Alexandra Bacher came on in relief for Walter during the 6th inning, making her sixth appearance of the season. Bacher managed to get the final two outs in the inning, stranding a pair of runners in scoring position.
Freshman Caprice Bohmer came on to close out the win for the Huskies in the 7th inning, making her ninth appearance of the season. Florida Gulf coast threatened, loading the bases, but Bohmer managed to shut the door on the Eagles for her first career save, and helped UConn secure their third win of the season.
