STORRS, Conn.- UConn men's and women's track and field look to continue their reign at the BIG EAST Championships, as both teams look to win their fifth consecutive indoor titles this weekend in Chicago. Entering the weekend, UConn has rewritten the program record books with 37 all-time top 10 marks in program history and 4 new program records.
How We Got Here
The Huskies dominated in the Windy City last year, with both teams putting together complete performances across the board. The men's team finished with 236.5 points, winning five events (heptathlon, high jump, long jump, triple jump, 400m). Diarmuid O'Connor and Kasey Savage shared Most Outstanding Field Performer honors. Savage won the men's high point performer, as well. This season, O'Connor ranks 29th in the country in the heptathlon 4,201 points. Multiple Huskies join O'Connor in the national ranks, with Medwin Odamtten ranking 28th in the 60m (6.61) and Enaji Muhammad clearing 2.14m in the high jump to rank 43rd in the country. Odamtten set a new program record in the 60m dash earlier this season with a time of 6.61 on January 30th.
On the women's side, UConn posted 189 points to win its sixth conference crown. The Huskies won the pentathlon, 5000m long jump, pole vault, and triple jump. After an all-American honorable mention in her freshman season, Maresa Hense has continued the strong start to her UConn career. The German sophomore ranks ninth in the country in the pentathlon with 4,201 points, setting a new school record.
The multi-events will begin tomorrow at 12:00pm. The track preliminary rounds will kick off with the women's one mile at 3:30pm. The field events will begin at 2:00pm with the women's pole vault.
