Huskies Secure Series Win Over DePaul

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team defeated the DePaul Blue Demons in both games of the doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. The Huskies were victorious in game one, 11-3 in a six-inning run rule. UConn came from behind to win game two, scoring five unanswered runs to secure a 7-5 victory.
Game One
Freshman Caprice Bohmer earned her 13th start of the season in the series opener. Bohmer was sensational in the circle, pitching all 6.0 innings, tying her career high in strikeouts with 11. She gave up three runs on five hits.
UConn jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Freshman Emma Willers knocked in a pair of runs with a single to right field, scoring Haley Coupal and Kaitlyn Breslin. Willers has notched RBIs in four of her last five games. Two batters later, another freshman, Ava Calciano extended UConn's lead with a double to left center field, scoring Willers all the way from first base to make it 3-0.
UConn tacked on three more runs to its lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Coupal doubled to left center field, scoring Savannah Ring. The next batter, Breslin grounded out to second base, scoring Cat Petteys from third base. Junior Caylee De Meo capped off the inning with a single to left center field, scoring Coupal, pushing UConn's lead to 6-0. De Meo has recorded an RBI in three of her last four games.
In the bottom of the 4th inning, Calciano added to the Huskies lead with an inside the park home run, her second homer of the season to make it 7-0.
DePaul scored all of their runs in the top of the 6th inning on a pair of hits, trimming into UConn's lead, 7-3.
The Huskies responded right back in the bottom half of the 6th inning, scoring four runs to end the game in a run-rule victory. Senior Kaitlyn Kibling delivered the big hit of the inning with a three-run home run to right field, her fifth of the season, pushing the UConn lead to 10-3. Coupal walked it off with a single to right field, scoring Ring from second base, giving the Huskies an 11-3 win in the series opener.

Game Two
Graduate Jessica Walter got the start in game two, making her 11th start of the season. Walter went 4.1 innings giving up four runs on seven hits adding four strikeouts.
DePaul opened the scoring in the top of the 1st inning with a two-run home run to give the Blue Demons their first lead of the day, 2-0.
UConn responded in the bottom of the 1st inning with a run to make it 2-1. Kaitlyn Kibling led off the inning with a triple, setting up Savannah Ring to drive her in with a single to left field.
DePaul added to its lead in the top of the 3rd inning with another two-run home run, putting the Huskies down 4-1.
UConn again responded in the bottom half of the 3rd inning, as Cat Petteys hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left field, scoring Kibling from third base, making it a two-run game at 4-2.
Redshirt-junior Sydnee Koosh came on in relief for Walter in the 4th inning, making her 13th appearance this season. Koosh went 1.1 innings giving up a run on a pair of hits with a strikeout.
DePaul extended its lead in the top of the 5th inning, scoring a run to make it 5-2.
Walter re-entered the game during the top of the 5th inning and managed to limit the Blue Demons to just one run despite having a runner in scoring position.
UConn once again had an answer for DePaul in the bottom of the 5th inning, scoring four runs to take their first lead of the game at 6-5. The Huskies loaded the bases for the heart of the order who delivered. Haley Coupal nearly cleared the bases with a double down the right field line, scoring Kibling and Ring. UConn tied the game on heads up base running from Petteys as she scored from third base on a wild pitch, knotting the game at 5-5. The next batter, Kaitlyn Breslin gave the Huskies the lead for good with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Coupal, making it 6-5.
Caprice Bohmer came on in relief for Walter during the 6th inning, making appearances in consecutive games in the circle. Bohmer went on to lock down the win for the Huskies, notching her second save of the season, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Ava Calciano added an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th inning, scoring on a wild pitch to extend the UConn lead to 7-5.
