NORFOLK, Va. - The UConn baseball team (6-7) captured a 4-2 win against Old Dominion (7-5) in the series opener at the Ellmer Family Baseball Complex.
The Monarchs looked to take the lead in the bottom of the first with three-straight two outs singles. But on Maverick Stalling's base hit to left field, Nater Wachter fired a strike to the plate and catcher Chris Cancel secured the ball and tagged the runner as he barreled into the UConn catcher.Â
The Huskies took the lead in the third on a Maddix Dalena infield single. Chris Polemeni scored all the way from second as the shortstop was caught off guard, bobbled the ball and fired off the mark to the plate.Â
UConn added to the lead in the fifth with Wachter lining an RBI single into left field with the bases loaded. Chase Taylor pinch hit later in the frame and capitalized with a two-out, two-run single into left field.Â
The Monarchs immediately responded by scoring a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out against UConn starter Charlie West, the lefthander induced a ground ball to third that Dalena started an inning-ending around the horn double play.Â
West finished his night with 5.0 innings of two-run ball with just one walk and struck out five to earn the victory.
Paxton Meyers closed the game with 4.0 dominant shutout innings out of the pen. The righthander allowed just two hits. did not walk a batter and struck out a season-high five.Â
Polemeni, Jackson Marshall, Dalena and Wachter all registered multi-hit ballgames on Sunday.
The series resumes on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Cayden Suchy getting the ball for the Huskies.Â
