Huskies Secure Series Win at St. John’s

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The UConn softball team defeated the St. John's Red Storm, 4-1 on Monday afternoon at Baker Athletics Complex. The Huskies secure their first conference series win of the season, starting off BIG EAST play with a 2-1 record.
Graduate Jessica Walter got the ball in the series finale, making her 8th start of the season for the Huskies. Walter tosses 2.2 scoreless innings surrendering just two hits with a strikeout.
UConn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning on heads up base running by Kaitlyn Breslin and Cat Petteys.
Freshman Caprice Bohmer came on in relief for Walter in the second inning, making her 15th appearance of the season for the Huskies. Bohmer pitched 4.0 scoreless innings giving up four hits, adding four strikeouts.
UConn extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the 4th inning. The Huskies 8 & 9 hitters, Bella Cruz and Kaitlyn Kibling each singled to lead off the inning, setting the table for the top of the UConn lineup. Savannah Ring brought home Cruz from third base on a throwing error by St. John's, doubling the Huskies lead. A batter later, Haley Coupal worked a five-pitch bases loaded walk, scoring Kibling from third base. The next batter, Breslin scored Ring with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Sophomore Amber Bretton came on in relief for Bohmer in the 6th inning, making her 4th appearance of the season. Bretton faced just three batters before being relieved by the UConn's starter Walter who would close out the game for the Huskies in the circle, securing the final five outs.
St. John's scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the 6th inning, but the Huskies pitching staff managed to shut the door on the Red Storm offense.
News and Notes
- Cat Petteys recorded her third straight multi-hit game, giving her seven this season. She has logged a hit in five straight games.
- Haley Coupal recorded her fifth multi-hit game this season. She reached base safely in all four of her at bats.
- Kaitlyn Breslin recorded her sixth multi-RBI game this season.
- UConn's defense did not commit an error, their six errorless game this season.
- UConn tied their game high this season with seven walks.
