Huskies Power Past Butler in Game One

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The UConn softball team took game one of the series on Friday afternoon, defeating the Butler Bulldogs, 16-3 in a six-inning run rule victory for the Huskies, marking their eighth straight win. UConn improves to 10-3 in BIG EAST play, moving to 18-22 overall this season.
Freshman Caprice Bohmer made her 17th start of the season in the series opener for the Huskies. Bohmer went 3.2 innings giving up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts, earning her eighth victory of the season.
UConn jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, sending all nine hitters to the plate. Sophomore Cat Petteys gave the Huskies the lead with her 13th home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field. Later in the inning, freshman Ava Calciano knocked in Kaitlyn Breslin from second base with a single to center field, extending UConn's lead.
Butler responded in the bottom of the 1st inning with three runs to make it a one-run game at 4-3.
The game would remain a one-score contest through the 4th inning with both pitchers keeping the opposing team's offenses at bay.
Graduate Jessica Walter came on in relief for Bohmer during the 4th inning, making her 28th appearance this season. Walter tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in the circle, giving up just one hit, adding a strikeout.
In the top of the 5th inning, Calciano gave the Huskies some breathing room, delivering a two-run double to left field, scoring Breslin and Emma Willers to make it 6-3. Calciano's three RBI marks a career high for the Lewes, Delaware native.
UConn's offense exploded for ten runs in the top of the 6th inning, behind seven hits, three being home runs, giving the Huskies a cushioned lead at 16-3. Senior Savannah Ring got it started with her third hit of the game, a two-run home run over the left field fence, her fourth homer of the season to make it 8-3. Three batters later, Breslin slugged the Huskies second long ball of the inning, a three-run shot to left field, her eighth homer of the season, pushing the UConn lead to 11-3. Later in the inning, sophomore Heidi Barber drove in two more runs with a double to right center field, scoring pinch runner Bella Cefola and Calciano. Two batters later, Ring recorded her first career four-hit game with an RBI single to center field, scoring Barber, ballooning the Huskies lead to 14-3. Petteys capped off the big inning with her second home run of the game, a two-run shot to left field, marking her second multi-homer game this season.
Sophomore Amber Bretton made her 12th appearance of the season, coming on in relief for Walter to close out the final three outs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Bretton set the Bulldogs down 1-2-3, giving the Huskies their eighth straight win.

- Kaitlyn Breslin recorded her fourth three-hit game this season, marking her 10th multi-hit game this season. Breslinnow has eight home runs this year. Her three RBI gave her 12 multi-RBI games this season.
- Ava Calciano recorded her second career three-hit game and drove in a career high three RBI. Calciano now has five multi-hit and three multi-RBI games in her rookie season.
- Caprice Bohmer recorded her 100th strikeout this season.
- Heidi Barber recorded her fourth multi-RBI game this season.
- Kaitlyn Kibling has reached base safely in eight consecutive games.
- UConn's defense did not commit an error for the 17th time this season.
