INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The UConn softball team shutout the Butler Bulldogs, 5-0 on Saturday afternoon, securing the series win, and the team's ninth straight victory. The Huskies improve to 11-3 in BIG EAST play and 19-22 overall this season.
Redshirt-junior Sydnee Koosh made her ninth start of the season for the Huskies. Koosh tossed 3.0 scoreless innings in the circle, giving up five hits with one strikeout.
UConn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning off the bat of sophomore infielder Cat Petteys with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Savannah Ring from third base. Petteys has recorded an RBI in seven of her last eight games.
Koosh managed to limit the Bulldogs offense, stranding six runners on base, including escaping a bases loaded jam in the 3rd inning.
Graduate Jessica Walter came on in relief for Koosh during the bottom of the 4th inning, making her 29th appearance this season. Coming in with two runners on and zero outs, Walter came up big for the Huskies in the circle, striking out the side to keep Butler off the scoreboard. Walter went on to pitch the rest of the game for the Huskies tossing 4.0 scoreless inning, only giving up two hits with three strikeouts.
UConn's offense gave Walter some breathing room in the top of the 6th inning, extending the lead to 5-0 on four hits. The top of the Huskies order loaded the bases for the middle of the lineup. Junior Kaitlyn Breslin worked an eight-pitch walk, forcing in Ring from third base. The next batter, Ava Calciano brought in two more runs with a single to center field, scoring Petteys and Haley Coupal to make it 4-0. Breslin later came around to score on a Butler throwing error to push it to a five-run lead.
Walter locked down the final six outs, securing UConn's third straight conference series victory.
