VILLANOVA, PA -- After leading the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team in goals each of the past two years, Pamela Lowie (Jr., Cortland, NY) wasted no time in setting the tone for the 2001 campaign with three goals against Villanova to lift UConn to a 10-7 victory in the Huskies season opener. UConn’s record is now 1-0, while the Wildcats slipped to 1-1.
Lowie got things going less than three minutes into the contest when she beat Wildcat goalkeeper Kelly O’Leary to make it a 1-0 UConn lead. However, just 10 seconds later Sarah DePeters, who led VU with three goals of her own, scored an unassisted goal to even the game. After Heather Bliss (So., Tully, NY) put the Huskies up by one, DePeters answered again at the 21:26 mark to make it 2-2. Connecticut then scored two goals in 25 seconds to build a two-goal lead at the half.
Bliss score her second of the game at the 23:08 mark in the second to make it 6-3. DePeters closed the gap to 7-5 when she notched her third goal, but the Huskies began to put the game away as they got goals from Kariane Lauri (Fr., Memphis, NY), Kristen Williams (Jr., Levittown, NY) and Megan Campbell (Sr., Phoenixville, PA) to build a 10-5 lead.
UConn’s April Pollock (So., North Syracuse, NY) made 14 saves to O’Leary’s 11.
The University of Connecticut lacrosse team will continue action Sunday, March 11, as they stay in the Philadelphia area to take on Temple at 1 p.m. This will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
