STORRS, CONNECTICUT -- University of Connecticut head football coach Randy Edsall announced Thursday the selection of three seniors and two juniors to be captains of the 2001 Husky Football squad.
Senior quarterback Ryan Tracey, senior offensive lineman C.J. Hessel, senior linebacker Kamari Stroman, junior defensive back Jamal Lundy and junior cornerback Roy Hopkins were chosen in a vote of their teammates. These selections will mark the first time in 103 seasons that UConn has ever had as many as five team captains.
"I was very encouraged that our football team thought we had several individuals capable of leading them in the 2001 season," said Edsall. "Each of these five young men has had success in our program both on and off the field. They have also overcome adversity to get where they are today and will provide a tremendous example for our underclassmen of where hard work and determination can get you, in athletics and in life."
Tracey and Hopkins are both recovering from knee injuries that ended their 2000 seasons, Tracey in game eight and Hopkins in game one. Hessel came to UConn as a walk-on after transferring from Philadelphia Textile, where he was a basketball player. Stroman started his Husky career as a running back, but has started 19 games at linebacker over the past two seasons. Lundy has started the last 16 games in the Husky defensive backfield and was an All-ECAC performer in 2000 while leading the Huskies in tackles.
UConn opens Spring Practice on Monday, March 26, 2001 and the Annual Blue-White Scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, April 21 at Noon.
UConn opens the 2001 season on September 1, 2001 at future BIG EAST Football Conference opponent Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.
