Women's Lacrosse Falls To Virginia Tech, 12-11

Storrs, CT - The University of Connecticut women's lacrosse team let a precarious 6-4 halftime lead slip away as visiting Virginia Tech defeated the Huskies 12-11 at Morrone Stadium today in Storrs, CT. With the loss UConn drops to 2-10 overall, 0-5 in league play while the Hokies raise their record to 5-8 and 3-2 in the BIG EAST.
UConn jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the game behind goals from Kristen Williams (Levittown, NY) and Susan Payne (Penn Yan, NY). The Hokies answered with a goal at 24:59. UConn's Pam Lowie (Cortland, NY) scored twice and Williams struck again to give UConn a 5-1 advantage. Tech countered with two more goals and Abby Morgan (West Chester, PA) scored the final goal of the half to bring the score to 6-4 in favor of the Huskies.
Lowie scored her third goal of the game to open the half at 24:24. Virginia Tech countered just 14 seconds later. The goal ignited a five-goal run for the Hokies as they took a 9-7 lead. Lowie scored again at 16:03 to get UConn within one goal but Tech struck again at 10:15. Bonnie Wehinger (North Syracuse, NY) scored at 4:44 off a feed >from Lowie but Virginia Tech answered at 3:31 with a goal of their own. Lowie mounted her own ferocious comeback, scoring goals at 2:17 and 1:21 to tie the score at 11 goals apiece but it was not enough as the Hokies scored with just 11 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Connecticut goalkeeper April Pollock (North Syracuse, NY) had 11 saves while Virginia Tech's Stacey Rainbolt preserved the win with 14 stops.
Connecticut returns to action on Wednesday, April 25 versus Massachusetts in Amherst, MA. The game is scheduled to be played at 4:00 p.m. The Huskies return to Joseph J. Morrone Stadium on Thursday, April 26 for a 4:00 p.m. game vs. Quinnipiac.
