Syracuse Tops UConn, 19-11

SYRACUSE, NY (March 30) – The University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team fell to Syracuse University, 19-11, in the Huskies first BIG EAST match-up of the season on Saturday afternoon in Syracuse, NY. UConn fell to 3-4 overall, 0-1 in the conference, while SU improved to 6-2 overall, 2-1 in the BIG EAST.
Syracuse came out hard in the first half scoring four goals in the first six minutes of play, including two from the team’s leading scorer Kim Wayne. Connecticut struck next at the 10-miunte mark of the half on a shot from Tracy Mullaney (Cockeysville, MD). Syracuse grabbed the next two goals taking the 6-1 lead. UConn capped off its first half scoring on goals from Kelly Feeley (Collingswood, NJ) and Heather Bliss (Tully, NY).
UConn came out strong in the second half looking for redemption. Within the first 10-minutes UConn brought the score within reach using several players off the bench. Pam Lowie (Cortland, NY) scored all three of her goals in the second half for UConn, and the Huskies came as close a 9-5 in the half.
Freshman Abbey VanDeusen (Fayetteville, NY) had a goal and two assists plus collected six ground balls and had three draw controls. Also, contributing was freshman Jacqui Hamilton (Hopkinton, NY) who scored a goal and an assist, plus four draw controls.
April Pollock (North Syracuse, NY) played the entire first half and into the second, making four saves and allowing 12 goals. Jennifer Wong (Greenwood Village, CO) relieved Pollock stopping two shots on goal and allowing seven goals.
Connecticut will host BIG EAST foe Notre Dame on Saturday, April 6 at 1:00 pm at Morrone Stadium in Storrs.
