UConn Earns First Win of the Season Over Quinnipiac

STORRS, CT (March 6) – The University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team downed Quinnipiac University, 15-4, earning its first victory of the season at the George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex in Storrs on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies improved their record to 1-1, while Quinnipiac played in its first game of the season.
Connecticut jumped out to an early lead scoring five goals in the first 10-minutes of play. Quinnipiac scored its lone goal at the midpoint of the half (16:58) on a free-position shot by Christy Smallman. UConn tallied three more scores to end the half. Freshman Tracy Mullaney (Cockeysville, NY) and junior Heather Bliss (Tully, NY) each had two goals in the first half of play.
In the second half, UConn went on a five-goal scoring spree before Quinnipiac notched its first of the half at the 14:41 mark. The Huskies closed out their scoring with 2:44 remaining in regulation on a goal from freshman Jessica Gonnella (Baldwinsville, NY). QU recorded the last two goals of the game, including a free-position shot with three-seconds left on the game clock.
Freshmen Jacqui Hamilton (Hopkinton, MA) and Mullaney both notched their first career hat tricks in only their second game the collegiate level. Bliss, rookie Abbey VanDeusen (Fayetteville, NY) and senior Kelly Feeley (Collingswood, NJ) each added two goals in the Huskies victory.
UConn’s April Pollock (North Syracuse, NY) played the majority of the first half making three saves, allowing one goal. Freshman Jennifer Wong (Greenwood Village, NY) made her debut in net for the Huskies recording four saves on three goals. Megan Matthew tended net for Quinnipiac stopping 12 shots, allowing 15 goals.
Connecticut will host Lafayette University on Sunday, March 10 at 1:00 pm at the George J. Family Sports Complex in Storrs, CT.
