Huskies Fall to BIG EAST Rival Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ (April 12) – The University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team fell to BIG EAST rival Rutgers, 9-6, on Saturday afternoon at Yurcak Field. The Huskies drop to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference, while Rutgers improves to 8-3 on the season and 1-2 in the BIG EAST.
UConn and Rutgers played an even first half as both teams held one goal leads during the half and the two teams were tied four other times. The Scarlet Knights started the scoring on a goal by Maggie Bopp assisted by Cali Wojdyla at the 6:20 mark. UConn would tie it at 1-1 when Tracy Mullaney (Cockeysville, MD) scored a free position goal at 6:57. Bopp would put Rutgers back in front at 7:14 on a goal assisted by Cristina Curiale. Senior Bonnie Wehinger (North Syracuse, NY) evened the score at 2-2 for the Huskies at 9:52. Rutgers would take a one goal lead again on a goal by Melissa Mosey at 15:55. The Huskies would score two unanswered goals by Mullaney at 16:35 and 19:48 to take their only lead of the game at 4-3. The Scarlet Knights would regain the lead on back-to-back goals by Mosey at 20:32 and 28:59 to end the half with a 5-4 lead.
Rutgers continued their momentum from the first half scoring the first four goals of the second half to take a 9-4 lead. Kate Slotman was responsible for three of the Scarlet Knights goals at 35:03, 48:44 and 49:57 and Curiale scored the other at 39:28. UConn would finish the scoring on Mullaney’s fourth goal at 51:52 and a Kariane Lauri (Memphis, NY) goal at 52:49 for the final score of 9-6.
April Pollock (North Syracuse, NY) played the majority of minutes in goal for UConn, allowing seven goals and making five saves. Rutgers put 31 shots on goal compared to the Huskies 18 and the Scarlet Knights caused 20 turnovers to Connecticut’s seven.
Connecticut will continue action on the road on Wednesday, April 16, at Boston University. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
