STORRS, CT (Jan. 21) -- University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey net-minder Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI) has been named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week after playing in two games against defending Hockey East champion Providence and allowing only two goals.
Murphy entered the Huskies’ game at Providence on Friday in the third period and shutout the Friars for the period, allowing the Huskies to scratch their way back into contention before falling 5-3. Murphy started Saturday’s contest against Providence and allowed only two goals while stopping 32 shots in over 58 minutes of action. For the season, Murphy has notched a 2.93 goals against average and a .903 save percentage.
UConn travels to Maine for a weekend double-header on January 23 and 24. The series carries huge ramifications in the Hockey East standings as the Huskies are only four points shy of the second place Black Bears.
