STORRS, Conn. – No. 6 UConn women's hockey is set to take on No. 3 Penn State on Saturday, March 14 with a trip to the Frozen Four on the line. Puck drop is set for 2:00pm at Pegula Ice Arena. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
UConn advanced to the regional final after defeating Princeton in the first round, 4-1 on Thursday. Senior forward Kyla Josifovic continued her hot scoring stretch, netting two goals to lead the Huskies to their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. Josifovic has recorded a point in nine straight games. She became the first Husky since 2007-08 to tally 40 points in a season. Hockey East Goaltender of the Year Tia Chan turned away 41 shots in the win. Chan has made 20+ saves in six straight games.
A Look at Penn State
The Penn State Nittany Lions (32-5) earned the No.3 overall seed and secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the AHA Tournament Championship for the fourth consecutive season. The Nittany Lions won the AHA regular season title, going 22-2 in conference play. Penn State is coached by Jeff Kampersal in his ninth season. The Nittany Lions began the season ranked at No. 8 in the USCHO Preseason Poll and climbed as high as No. 3 during the year, their highest ranking in program history. They have held a spot in the top five since mid-November. Penn State has been led by senior forward Tessa Janecke with 23 goals and 22 assists this season. Janecke was named a top 3 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award.
Series History
This will be the 10th all-time meeting between these two programs. UConn leads the all-time series against Penn State, 5-1-3. Since the 2023-24 season, the Huskies and Nittany Lions have met four times. In those four meetings, UConn holds a slight edge, going 2-1-1. The Huskies are 3-0-1 against Penn State at Pegula Ice Arena. Each program is aiming to punch its ticket to the Frozen Four for the first time in program history.
