WAKEFIELD, Mass. (March 14, 2005) - The ITECH Hockey East Rookie of the Year, UConn forward Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ont.), was named Rookie of the Week as released by the conference on Monday. It is the fourth time Hawkins has received the honor this season. Senior forward Tiffany Owens (Novi, Mich.) and junior goaltender Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) were both named to the league's Honor Roll. All three were instrumental to the Huskies' first-ever appearance in the Hockey East Championship game.
After notching an assist in the second period, Hawkins scored the game-tying goal with 3:42 remaining the play in UConn's semifinal game against New Hampshire on Saturday. She then set up the game-winning goal in overtime to advance the Huskies to the championship game.
Owens, who had already connected with Hawkins to score in the semifinal game, was on the receiving end of the rookie's overtime pass and scored the game-winner against the Wildcats on a slap shot. She also assisted on the lone UConn goal in the championship game against Providence. For her clutch efforts, Owens was named to the All-Tournament team.
Shain backstopped the Huskies to their championship appearance, making 32 saves in the 5-4 overtime win against UNH. She then tallied 27 saves, many of them at point-blank range, in the title game loss to top-seeded Providence.
