SYRACUSE, N.Y. (March 26, 2006) - Shannon Burke netted a hat trick and added an assist for the University of Connecticut women's lacrosse team but a ferocious second half charge by No. 14 Syracuse University paced the Orange to a 13-7 win on Sunday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. UConn dips to 2-4 with the loss while the Orange improves to 6-2.
The game started off auspiciously for the Huskies who opened a 5-2 lead over the game's first 22 minutes in search of their first ever win over the Orange. The Orange struck first in the contest but Kristin Link and Burke each tallied on free position shots to put UConn up 2-1. Caitlyn Dragon scored the second of her eventual three goals on the day at 19:03 to tie the game but the Huskies would hold the Orange scoreless for the next 12 and a half minutes. Burke assisted on a Link goal over that span and netted two of her own.
Syracuse scored four times in the remaining 4:40 of the first half to even the score. Sandwiched inbetween the SU goals was one by UConn's Laura Trzasko which helped account for the 6-6 halftime tie.
After the break, Syracuse took charge of the contest, scoring three times in the first 5:53 to go up 9-6, a lead that SU would extend to 10-6 when Kathryn Rowan scored with 9:00 to play. UConn snapped this run with Trzasko's second unassisted goal of the day, but the homestanding Orange would tally three times in the final two minutes to push the final score to 13-7.
Kristen Haldeman went the distance in the UConn net, making 18 saves. Jen Kasel stopped 11 shots for the Orange.
UConn returns to action on Friday, March 31, when the Huskies welcome Notre Dame to Storrs at 1:00 p.m. for the team's home opener.
