WEST POINT, N.Y. - A last minute power play goal by junior Justin Hernandez (Farmington Hills, Mich.) gave the University of Connecticut men's hockey team a 2-1 advantage and the victory over Army Saturday at the Tate Rink.
The goal was the second of the season for Hernandez and was aided by classmate Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Minn.) who notched his fourth assist of the year and sophomore Daniel Naurato (Livonia, Mich.) who earned his fifth assist of the season.
With the victory the Huskies improve to 4-17-3 on the year and 4-12-3 in Atlantic Hockey action. Army drops to 8-12-4 on the year and 7-8-3 in conference play.
UConn was the first team to get on the board when freshman Sean Ambrosie (Moorhead, Minn.) notched his fifth goal of the season with some assistance from Brian Reagan (Ballwin, Mo.) and Marcello Ranallo (Burnaby, B.C.) at 16:20 in the second period. The Huskies hung on to their lead entering the second intermission with the one-goal advantage.
In the third, UConn was able to ward off the Army attack, but at 11:36 Mike Hull took advantage of a power play opportunity evening things out at one-all.
UConn would not go down fighting as they used their own man-up opportunity to retake the lead with Hernandez scoring the game winner.
Freshman Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) made 34 saves on the night en route to earning his second victory of the season. The Huskies were 1-for-2 on the night on the power play while Army was 1-for-5 in man-up situations.
UConn is back in action on Monday night when they head to Princeton for their first ever meeting with the Tigers at the Hobey Baker Memorial Rink. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m.
