Monique Weber Receives Pure Hockey Player of the Week Accolades

STORRS, Conn. - Sophomore Monique Weber (Rogers, Minn.) was instrumental in the No. 7 University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team's 4-1 victory over Providence that launched the squad into a three-way tie for the Hockey East lead. Weber led all with three points against the Friars on Saturday, pulling in Pure Hockey Player of the Week honors for the first time this season.
She scored three-straight points against No. 9/8 Providence at Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum, scoring a mere 43 seconds into the game and adding a power-play goal for the eventual gamewinner in the first period. Weber assisted the Huskies' third unanswered goal of the game for her third and final point of the 4-1 victory.
With a relatively balanced effort of 14 goals and 13 assists, Weber is tied for the team lead in points scored with 27. She is among the team leaders with five power play goals and three game winners as well. Weber is responsible for two of the Huskies' three unassisted goals this season.
Weber received two Hockey East weekly awards in the 2008-09 season as she was named the Mission Rookie of the Week twice. She is the third UConn student-athlete to be named the Pure Hockey Player of the Week this season and it is the fourth time the Huskies have boasted the Hockey East's Player of the Week. UConn has received at least one weekly award from the conference in four of the last five weeks.
No. 7 Connecticut (19-7-6, 10-4-5-1) concludes the regular-season and continues to battle to stay atop the Hockey East standings with a pair of games against No. 8/9 Northeastern this weekend. The Huskies host the Huskies of Northeastern on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the team's AT&T Senior Day. UConn travels to Boston on Sunday to close out the regular season against Northeastern with a 1 p.m. contest. Entering the final week of the regular season, Connecticut his tied with New Hampshire and Providence with the Hockey East lead. Northeastern is tied for fourth with Boston University, each boasting a 8-6-5 conference record.
