STORRS, Conn. - Four members of the No. 7 University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team received All-Hockey East honors on Friday night. Senior Cristin Allen (Pickering, Ont.), awarded the conference's Best Defensemen Award earlier in the week, was named to the first team on Friday. The Huskies received three All-Hockey East Honorable Mentions with sophomore Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.), junior Jody Sydor (St. Alberta, Alta.) and sophomore Monique Weber (Rogers, Minn.) all announced by the conference at the Hockey East Championship Banquet in the Marquis Ballroom at the Providence Marriott.
Allen's honor marks the sixth time a member of the Huskies has been named to the All-Hockey East First-Team. She is the second to receive first-team honors in the past three seasons and the first defensemen to do so since Natalie Vibert (2006-07). It is the second-consecutive post season accolade for Allen who earned a spot All-Hockey East Second-Team following the 2008-09 season.
She leads the conference in defensemen scoring with 24 points, including a team-best 21 assists. Allen has recorded 16 of her points scored in Hockey East contests and had an assist in the quarterfinal win over then-No. 7/8 Northeastern (Feb. 27). The assistant captain is 10th in the NCAA in points per game among defensemen (0.69).
It is the second-consecutive season that the Huskies' starting netminder has received an honorable mention from the conference at the end of the season. Garcia's All-Hockey East Honorable Mention is the first post-season honor for the starting UConn goalie. She was named the Defensive Player of the Week four times this season and was selected as the ITECH Goaltender of the Month for January.
Garcia is ninth in the nation with a goals-against average of 1.58 and is 10th with a .930 save percentage. She boasts a Hockey East GAA best of 1.42 and the third-best save percentage in conference play (.935). Garcia is 17-7-7 between the posts this season with a league leading six shutouts, including four in Hockey East action.
Brittany Wilson received an honorable mention following her senior season in 2008-09. Garcia tied Wilson's single-season win record of 17 with the Hockey East Tournament Quarterfinal win on Feb. 27.
This is the first post-season accolade for Sydor since she was named to the All-Rookie Team following the 2007-08 season. The assistant captain has 10 helpers on the year and an impressive +12 rating. She has scored twice for the Huskies this year, both on the power play. A consistent presence on the blueline in special team situations, Sydor leads the team in blocked shots with 26.
Weber co-leads the Huskies in scoring this season with 14 goals and 13 assists (27 pts.) This is the first post-season award for the sophomore forward who has 14 of her points in Hockey East action. She is among the three team members to lead UConn with nine points on the power play, presenting a balanced effort of five goals and four assists.
No. 7 Connecticut takes on top-seeded and No. 10 ranked Providence in the first quarterfinal on Saturday. The game is set to begin at noon at Schneider arena. It is the fourth time in Hockey East Tournament history that the Huskies and Friars have faced each other in post-season play.
