STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team closed the chapter on one of the most successful seasons in program history on Friday at its end of the year banquet at the Nathan Hale Inn. Head coach Heather Linstad and assistants Jaime Totten and Kirsti Anderson presented the team awards and acknowledged all of the student-athletes for their hard work and dedication to the team.
The 2009-10 Huskies went 21-9-7 and earned the program's second appearance in the Hockey East Championship game in history. UConn posted an 11-game unbeaten streak, including nine-straight victories, tying a pair of program records. The Huskies also captured their third-consecutive Nutmeg Classic title during the regular season.
Coach Totten presented two of the five team awards presented on Friday, all of which were voted on by the team. Kelly Horan (Methuen, Mass.) was named the Rookie of the Year after scoring 13 of her overall 18 points in Hockey East games. Horan led the rookie class with five goals and eight assists in conference and was fourth overall as she increased her presence on the ice as the season progressed. She is the first forward to receive the award since its inception following the 2006-07 season.
Tiffany Good (Hellertown, Pa.) was acknowledged as the team's Most Improved Player by her teammates after having a breakout year as a senior. She scored the first goal of her collegiate career at Northeastern and tacked on two more, adding two assists to finish the year with five points. Good was a career-best +8 at the end of the season.
Coach Linstad presented the final three student-athlete awards of the evening, acknowledging Cristin Allen (Pickering, Ont.) as the team's Most Valuable Player and Michelle Binning (Oshawa, Ont.) as the Unsung Hero.
Allen, a two-time Patty Kazmeier Nominee and 2010 Hockey East Best Defensemen, became the first defensemen to win the MVP award in program history. An assistant captain during the 2009-10 season, she was a consistent contributor to the power play and penalty kill. Allen led the team for the second-consecutive season in assists, tacking on 21 in her senior year.
In addition to being the Unsung Hero, Binning was often the hero during the season, finishing the year sixth in the NCAA with five game-winning goals. The assistant captain posted just the fifth 20-goal season in program history and tied her career-best with 30 points for the second-straight year.
Amy Hollstein (Pembroke, Mass.) was the Patti Babcock Award Recipient, an award selected by the UConn coaching staff. The award is given to acknowledge a student-athlete's outstanding dedication and loyalty and in recognition of her on-ice leadership that raises the level of play of those around her.
Hollstein was the 2009-10 team captain and a significant aspect of the team's overall success. She finished the season with eight goals and eight assists, including a pair of gamewinners.
Four of the major award winners were part of the 2010 senior class that graduates with a 79-55-19 record with the Huskies. All members of the class were recognized for their commitment to the program by their teammates and coaches before the night was over.
