STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut head lacrosse coach Katie Woods announced the Huskies 2010 fall schedule this afternoon (Tues., Sept. 21), which is highlighted by a pair of fundraising tournaments, the Nick Colleluori Women's Lacrosse Classic and the Friends of Jaclyn Playday.
UConn will open the fall season this Saturday (September 25) at the Nick Colleluori Women's Lacrosse Classic hosted by Hofstra, facing Adelphi, La Salle, UNH and Vermont throughout the day at the 14-team event.
The HEADstrong Tournament, which is in its second year, was the first of its kind on the women's side designed to help raise funds and awareness for the HEADstrong Foundation and blood cancer research.
"This is a great tournament for us to be a part of, not only for the playing experience but also because we are helping such a great cause with the HEADstrong Foundation," Woods said. "Being part of the tournament allows us to help grow the foundation both financially and by getting the name out to our fans so that more people are aware of the cause.
"The Hofstra head coach (Abby Morgan) and one of the assistant coaches (Tanya Kotowicz) are UConn alums, so staying connected to them in this aspect is also great for our program," Woods said.
The Huskies will continue their fall schedule with the first home contest of the season, hosting an Alumni game at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 9.
The following day Connecticut will travel to Hamden, Conn. for the Playday at Quinnipiac where they will face the host Bobcats at 12:30 p.m. and Fairfield at 1:50 p.m.
Connecticut's final fall tournament will be the Friends of Jaclyn Playday at Thayer Academy in Massachusetts, where the Huskies will face Boston University, UMass, Brown and Hofstra on Sunday, October 17.
The Friends of Jaclyn Playday benefits the FOJ Foundation, which is a non-profit, charitable organization that works to improve the life of children suffering from pediatric brain tumors and helps fund research. This marks the third season that the Huskies have been involved with the FOJ Foundation.
UConn closes the fall schedule with a home game against Bryant on Saturday, October 23, hosting the Bulldogs at 1:00 p.m.
