STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut lacrosse team will open the BIG EAST portion of their 2011 schedule this weekend, as the Huskies host Rutgers in a 1:00 p.m. contest on Saturday (March 19). UConn will be trying for its sixth win of the season, as the Huskies enter the contest with a 5-1 record and on a two-game win streak.
UConn's 5-1 record over the first three weeks of the season marks the fifth time that the Huskies have had five wins through the first six contests. UConn was 5-1 to start the season last year, and also held the same record during 2007, 2005 and 2000.
The Huskies will be trying for their first BIG EAST opener victory since the 2001 season when they defeated Villanova in the conference opener. UConn has faced Rutgers just once before in the first game of the BIG EAST schedule, falling to the Scarlet Knights last season, 15-10.
The UConn offense will rely on the duo of Lauren Kahn (Nanuet, N.Y.) and M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.) this weekend, as they have posted 48 of UConn's 119 points this season. Kahn has a team-high 10 assists and 15 goals and Lapham has a team-best 21 goals and two assists. They have both posted multiple points in each contest this year, including six point efforts against Iona (Lapham) and Sacred Heart (Kahn).
For the third straight week UConn is ranked in the top-two in five categories among BIG EAST opponents, including leading the pack with 16.33 draw controls per game and 19.83 points per contest. The Huskies rank second in goals (14.00 per game), assists (5.83) and shots (30.17), while also ranking third with 10.83 caused turnovers per outing.
Rutgers enters Saturday's contest after falling to No. 4 Penn, 9-6 on Wednesday. Before the loss, the Scarlet Knights had won three straight, defeating Delaware, St. Joseph's and Hofstra. Rutgers entered the week just out of the top-20 in the IWLCA poll, as they were receiving votes.
Saturday's game will be High School Day at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex, with the first 100 fans receiving free UConn Lacrosse T-Shirts!
