UConn Closes Regular Season On The Road

STORRS, Conn. - The Huskies will close out the 2011 regular season this weekend, as they take to the road to face Villanova and Loyola. UConn will face off against Villanova on Friday, April 29 at 6:00 p.m. and will then face Loyola on Sunday, May 1 at 1:00 p.m. UConn will try to close out the season strong, as they are still vying for the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament that will take place the first weekend of May.
UConn enters the final week of competition after notching their first BIG EAST victories of the season last week, when they defeated Cincinnati and Louisville. The 19-9 victory over the Bearcats improved UConn's overall record to 3-0 against Cincinnati, while they also kept their home record perfect (2-0) versus Louisville with a 14-12 win.
M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.), who was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, will lead UConn after setting a school record for goals in a season with 50. Lapham's 50 goals this year are a team-high, while she also has a team-best 57 points. She is joined on the offensive end by Lauren Kahn (Nanuet, N.Y.), who has a team-best 12 assists along with 33 goals.
On the defensive side of the field, sophomore goalie Brittney Testa (Bridgewater, Vt.) recorded her 100th save of the season against Cincinnati last week and now has 110 on the year. She earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after posting 19 saves against the Bearcats and Louisville.
Loyola will be the fourth ranked team that the Huskies will face this season, as the Greyhounds enter the weekend with a No. 7 ranking according to the IWLCA poll. Earlier this year UConn faced No. 16 Boston College, No. 17 Georgetown and No. 13 Syracuse.
Villanova (5-9, 1-5) enters Friday's contest on a three-game losing streak, falling to Louisville, Lafayette and Rutgers. Villanova's lone BIG EAST victory on the season came against Cincinnati, when the topped the Bearcats, 11-10. Loyola 13-1, 5-1) enters the weekend with a 13-1 record, falling to Georgetown last week, 13-15. The Greyhounds have had a four-goal margin of victory or larger in eight of their games this season, while they are 4-1 in games decided by three goals or less.
