Huskies Rout Quinnipiac, 18-6, Behind Lapham's Six Goals

STORRS, Conn - Led by senior attack M.E. Lapham's (Casanovia, N.Y.) six-goal day, the UConn women's lacrosse team routed in-state rival Quinnipiac, 18-6, today at the George J. Sherman Sports Complex in Storrs. The victory improves UConn to 2-0 to start the season. The game was Quinnipiac's first of the season.
UConn is off to a 2-0 start for the second straight season and just the fourth time in program history. The six goals by Lapham are tied for the third most in a single game by a UConn player. Lapham also extended her scoring streak to 41 games.
Lapham and the Huskies jumped out to a 6-0 lead just 6:12 into the contest and never looked back. She was joined in the rout by sophomore Lauren Kahn's (Nanuet, N.Y.) four goals and senior Kiersten Tupper's (Camillus, N.Y.) four-assist day.
Brittney Testa (Bridgewater, Vt.), the reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, finished with six saves to earn the victory.
Kahn and Lapham exchanged goals back-to-back to make it 4-0, junior Mackenzie Rainone (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored at 25:28 and Lapham added her third of the day to make it 6-0 at 23:48 before Quinnipiac managed their first shot of the game.
The Bobcats managed to beat Testa at 22:16 but the Huskies responded with five-straight goals to end the half up 11-1.
The second half saw back-and-forth scoring for the majority of the final 20 minutes. Quinnipiac made it 11-2 at 27:25 of the second half, before UConnn responded with goals from Rainone and Kahn.
With the score in UConn's favor at 15-6 with only 3:15 remaining, the Huskies tacked on three goals to close the scoring at 18-6.
For the game, UConn outshot Quinnipiac, 32-23. The Huskies dominated possession with a 17-10 edge in groundballs.
Connecticut will be in action next with a 3 p.m. contest against Boston College on Wednesday, February 29 in Storrs.
