STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut women's lacrosse coach Katie Woods announced on Tuesday that seniors goalkeeper Marya Fratoni (Downingtown, Pa.) defender Karaline Smith (Acton, Mass.) and attacker Grace Presnick (Suffield, Conn.) and junior midfielder Lauren Kwasnowski (Kingston, N.Y.) have been tabbed as captains for the 2014-15 season.
Fratoni appeared in seven games last season, saving 21 of 55 shots faced (.467) for the Huskies. She tallied a season-high three ground balls against Cincinnati (Apr. 19) and her 7.54 goals against average ranked third among all Big East Keepers.
Smith started 14 games in 2014 and finished the season with eight points on four goals and four assists. She recorded 16 ground balls throughout the year and caused seven turnovers for a UConn defense that ranked second in the Big East with 8.71 caused turnovers per game. Presnick has played in 16 games the last two years, accumulating three points throughout her time on the field.
Kwasnowski earned All-Big East First Team and Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Northeast Second Team honors last year after finishing the season with 15 ground balls and 10 draw controls. Her 11 caused turnovers were the third-highest total on UConn in 2013, and she started all 17 games.
"I'm really excited for the captains this year," Woods said. "I think all four of them have really strong leadership skills and they're going to balance each other out really well. They all have the desire to be great leaders moving forward as we look to compete for a conference title and return to the NCAA Tournament."
The Huskies, who will release their fall schedule later this week, qualified for their second straight Big East Tournament last season, finishing with a 10-7 overall record.
