STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team lost a tight knit battle against No. 22 Memphis, 2-1, on a cold night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
It took a little extra time for the UConn offense to heat up in the cold weather but the team played inspired soccer in the second half. After trailing 1-0 on the scoreboard and recording just one shot in the first half, the Huskies dialed it up in the second half.
Just two minutes into the half sophomore Sophia Danyko-Kulchycky slotted a pass ahead to Elena Santos. Santos received the ball inside the box and sliced her shot wide.
Moments later at the 52:29 mark Danyko Kulchycky delivered the equalizer for the Huskies. Sofia Leone ripped a shot that was deflected to the far side of the box where DK fired a shot into the back of the net. It was the fourth goal in back-to-back games for the forward and lifted her season total to eight.
Memphis scored the eventual game-winner in the 66th minute to take back control of the match. UConn created a couple quality opportunities late in regulation but were unable to capitalize on the chances.
Next up, the Huskies celebrate the 2018 senior class with a pre-game ceremony that will honor the five UConn seniors; Emily Costanzo, Kim Urbanek, Heidi Druehl, Liane Keegans and Elena Santos. The Huskies will also celebrate their final game at Morrone Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m. vs. Tulsa.
The team has played at Morrone since the program started play in 1979 and have posted a gaudy 330-69-28 record in Storrs. Fans coming to the games should be aware of road closures on Jim Calhoun Way. The road will be closed from Alumni Drive to I-Lot. To access I-Lot please use Separatist Road.
