PHILADELPHIA - A late goal in the second half by the Huskies lifted UConn to a 1-0 win at Temple at the Temple Sports Complex. The win was the second-straight American Conference road win for the Huskies.
UConn controlled the majority of the match with both possession and scoring opportunities. The Huskies out shot the Owls 16-9 overall and had numerous chances to get on the scoreboard.
In the first half, sophomore Sophia Danyko-Kulchycky earned a free kick just outside the box and drilled her attempt off the post in the 17th minute.
The best chance of the half, and possibly the game, came in the 36th minute when the Owls turned the ball over in the back. A pass led freshman Pato Jerzak on a one-on-one with the keeper and Jerzak teed up a shot that was parried away.Â
Randi Palacios and the UConn defense notched its second shutout of the season and the redshirt sophomore came up with a big save late in the first half to keep the game scoreless. The UConn keeper totaled four saves on the afternoon.
The Huskies continued to apply pressure in the second half senior Liane Keegans had an opportunity to record her first career goal inside the box but her shot was blocked away.
In a season that has consistently given UConn injuries, bad breaks and tough luck. A break turned the Huskies way with 6:30 remaining in the match. Danyko-Kulchycky served a ball into the box on a free kick that found the head of a Temple defender and caromed into the goal. The own goal proved to be the only score of the game and UConn earned its fourth win of the season.
UConn closes out the 2018 campaign with a road tilt at ECU on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. The Huskies will attempt to win back-to-back games for the first time this season.
