Hervol Finishes In First-Place Tie
HAMPDEN, Mass. --- The UConn golf team placed four players among the top 10 -- including senior Jimmy Hervol, who tied for first -- and five among the top 15 as it dominated the scoring on its way to a nine-stroke victory at the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse.
It marked the fourth time UConn has won the title in the 10-year history of the event, which was formerly known as the Connecticut Cup. It was the first time that the tournament has been held at GreatHorse,
UConn led after each round of the three-round event. Tuesday, the Huskies shot an aggregate 296 to finish with a 19-over 294-293-296=883, nine strokes in front of runner-up Hartford (892) in the 13-team event. The championship is the 12th title for UConn under 12-year coach Dave Pezzino.
Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) had a remarkably consistent 2-over 72-73-73=218, to record his lowest finish of the year, a tie for first place, and his fourth straight top 10 finish. Hervol tied with Hartford's Elias Gross, Cornell's Tianyi Cen and Siena's Jared Nelson for the top spot on the leaderboard, forcing a playoff for medalist honors.
Due to academic obligations, Nelson could not stay for the playoff, but Cen – whose Cornell team had left for home, only to turn around when it learned Cen had qualified for the playoff – parred the first sudden-death playoff hole to defeat Hervol and Gross for the individual title in the 84-player field.
It was the 17th Top 10 and 23rd Top 20 finish of Hervol's career and upped his total of par-or-better rounds to 48. It is the third time in his college career that Hervol has finished first.
Redshirt sophomore Chandler Morris (Hobe Sound, Fla.) had the best finish of his college career, shooting a 5-over 74-75-72=221 to finish in a tie for sixth place. It was the second top 10 and third top 20 finish of his career.
Redshirt junior Drake Hull (Rutland, Vt.) was right behind Morris with his 6-over 72-73-77=222 and a tie for eighth place, hos second top 10 and third top 20 finish and his 22nd round of par or better.
Hull's eight-place deadlock was with sophomore teammate Finn Boynton (Milford, Conn.), who was playing as an individual and earned the tie for eighth with a 6-over 76-74-72=222, his best career finish, his first round of par or better and the low round and low tourney of his career.
Senior Nick Harrington (Chaplin, Conn.) tied for 15th with an 8-over 76-72-76=224, his eighth top 20 finish and including his 22nd round of par or better. It was his best finish of the season.
Completing the UConn team was junior Tim Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.) who shot an 18-over 79-80-75=234 to finish in a tie for 52nd place.
Besides Boynton, the other Huskies playing as individuals included redshirt junior Zach Iannone (Hamden, Conn.), who finished in a tie for 17th place, his best finish of the season, with a 10-over 74-78-74=226; sophomore Jack Boulger (Walpole, Mass.), who tied for 26th with a 13-over 78-78-73=229; sophomore Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.), who shot a 16-over 78-77-77=232 to finish in a tie for 42nd place; freshman Nick Hampoian (North Reading, Mass.), who tied for 52nd with an 18-over 77-74-83=234; and senior Blake Kelley (Manchester, Conn.), who tied for 82nd with an 83-84-86=253.
The Huskies will compete in the final event on their fall schedule on Nov. 2-4, when they travel to Maui, Hawaii, for the second straight year to play in the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational at the Ka'anapali Royal Course.
