PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The UConn rowing team competed in the 36th Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta on Saturday, earning a second-place finish in the Second Varsity 4+ and a third-place finish in the Varsity 4+.
The Huskies, who returned to the Schuylkill River for the second time this year, competed against some premiere rowing programs in the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions. It was the second race of the spring for UConn, after competing against UCF, Jacksonville and Nova Southeastern on March 16.
"It was a solid day of racing for UConn today. I am very happy for the three boats that made the grand final," said head coach Jen Wendry. "The afternoon finals turned into survival rowing with very rough conditions. It was great practice for all our boats to experience both beautiful conditions in the morning and survival rowing in the afternoon."
The Second Varsity 4+ earned the best finish of the day for UConn, taking the silver medal with a time of 8:36.13 - just 12 seconds behind first-place Temple. It was one of three top-five placements for the Huskies in the Murphy Cup.
The Varsity 4+ finished in third place in a time of 8:27.81, following a second-place finish during the heat stage. In the Grand Final of the Second Varsity 8+, UConn completed the course in 7:42.34, good for fourth behind Temple, Drexel and George Washington.
"Temple University did a great job hosting and overall it was a very positive day for the Huskies," said Wendry. "We are excited to get faster this week in preparation for Boston College and Holy Cross next Sunday."
During the heat stage, the Varsity 8+ finished third, on its way to fifth place in the Petite Final in the last race of the day for the Huskies.
