CONWAY, S.C. - The UConn baseball team experienced the highs and lows of battling through the Conway Regional loser's bracket with a thrilling 6-5 win against No. 15 Coastal Carolina in the first game of the doubleheader before being eliminated by Washington in a tough-fought Regional Final, 9-6. UConn finishes its season 37-22-1 and advanced to its second Regional Final since 2011.
Game 1
After eliminating LIU Brooklyn on Saturday, the Huskies had the tall task of going up against the host school, Coastal Carolina, in a hostile environment at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Junior captain P.J. Poulin wanted the ball for the Huskies and made his first start of the season. The UConn closer, who has recorded lengthy outings out of the pen, logged a career-high six innings and gave up just two runs to the potent Chanticleers offense.
Poulin left the game with the score knotted 2-2 after Isaac Feldstein lined a two-run double into the right field corner in the fifth.
UConn took its first lead of the day in the seventh on Anthony Prato's second home run of the season, a solo shot out to left center. Two batters later, Isaac Feldstein smoked a no-doubt, two-run homer to make it 5-2 Huskies.
Coastal fought back and tied the game in the eighth with a three-run frame, in which the Chanticleers only had one hit. CJ Dandeneau came out of the pen and stranded the go-ahead run at third to keep the game tied at 5-5.
In the eighth it was UConn freshman Christian Fedko who delivered another huge knock in this tournament. The Gibsonia, Pa. product crushed his first career home run to lift the Huskies to a 6-5 lead.
Dandeneau stayed in for the ninth and closed out the ballgame to send UConn to the Regional Final vs. Washington.
Game 2
In the nightcap UConn came out of the gates hot with three runs in the first and third innings to take a 6-1 lead.
With a depleted bullpen, the Huskies handed the ball to Jeff Kersten to eat up as many innings as he could. The Pinole, Calif. native struggled in the third inning but rebounded to keep the game tied 6-6 as he exited after the fifth inning.
Freshman Colby Dunlop came on and was outstanding out of the pen for the Huskies. Unfortunately, the defense committed two big errors in the eighth to extend the inning and Washington drilled a bases clearing double to right field to take a 9-6 lead to the ninth.
Senior Troy Stefanski led the way for UConn with a five-hit game for the Huskies. It was the first time this season a UConn player has collected five hits.
Junior captain Zac Susi registered a multi-hit performance to extend his incredible reach base streak to 49 games.
Junior captain John Toppa registered a two-run single and produced a sacrifice fly to total 3 RBIs in the contest.
UConn closes a great season by being ranked in the Top 25 in the final seven weeks of the season. The Huskies set a program record with 23 road wins and recorded 35 wins or more for the fifth time in nine seasons.
UConn bids farewell to its four seniors: Isaac Feldstein, Trevor Holmes, Joe Rivera and Troy Stefanski, who all leave the program better than they found it.
UConn awaits the 2018 MLB Draft on Monday, June 4- Wednesday June 6 to see which Huskies will be selected and start their professional careers.
We thank #UConnNation for all the support of the program in 2018 and look forward to the future of Husky baseball.
