Huskies Face St. John's on Saturday
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn volleyball team got 22 kills from freshman Caylee Parker (Windsor, Ontario) to lead the Huskies past Rutgers in four sets Friday night in the 2018 Dog Pound Challenge at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies finish the day 2-0 and will face St. John's on Saturday for the tournament title.
The Huskies rang up matching 25-23 wins in the first two sets before the Scarlet Knights answered back in the third with a 25-23 win of their own. Rutgers ran out to a 21-12 lead before a late UConn rally cut the lead down to 23-22. Rutgers closed out the set with kills by Sahbria McLetchie and Beka Kojadinvoic. The Huskies rebounded and left no doubt in the fourth set, never trailing as they ran out to a 14-8 lead on the way to a 25-20 win to take the match.
Parker hit the 20-plus kill mark for the third time this season while senior Emma Turner (Winter Park, Fla.) collected her team-leading seventh double double with 47 assists and 10 digs to pace the Huskies. R-Senior Danielle Cabel (Bettendorf, Iowa) posted 10 kills while freshman Anna Petrova (Voronezh, Russia) chipped in 10 kills as well.
Defensively, senior Elizabeth Kline (Glenshaw, Pa.) collected 23 digs, her third match this season with 20-plus digs. Junior Ally Barrett (Geneva, Ill.) came away with a season-high 11 digs in the win.
Saturday's first match will feature Rutgers and Holy Cross who will battle for third place at 10 am. The Huskies and Red Storm take the court at 1 pm for the tournament title.
