No. 2 Huskies Rout Quinnipiac in BIG EAST Opener

STORRS, Conn. – Redshirt senior Cecile Pieper notched six points as the No. 2 UConn field hockey team (7-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) took down Quinnipiac (2-4, 0-1), 8-0, in the teams' conference opener Saturday afternoon.
Pieper led UConn with two goals and two assists. Junior Svea Boker tallied five points (2G, 1A) and senior Amanda Collins had three (1G, 1A). Freshman Maddy Wray, freshman Liz Romano and sophomore Vivienne Tucker also scored for the Huskies. Junior Antonia Tiedtke had a pair of assists.
UConn controlled the game from the opening pass, leading 25-3 in shots and 16-3 in shots on goal. The Huskies also held a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Wray started the scoring at 4:16 off a penalty corner with passes from Karo Kueskes and Tiedtke. Collins chipped a shot over the goalkeeper off a pass from Tiedtke to put UConn up 2-0 at 6:38.
Boker scored at 16:46 after a great pass from Pieper and a shot to the left of the cage. Pieper scored her first of the game off a penalty corner at 31:09. Romano scored her first career goal at 33:10 to give the Huskies a 5-0 lead at halftime.
Boker found the back of the cage again with a point-blank shot at 41:48. She found Pieper less than two minutes later. Tucker scooped up a rebound in a scramble in front of the cage and scored UConn's final goal at 48:08.
The goal total matches UConn's high for the season. The Huskies have now won 26 straight conference games, dating back to 2013.
Redshirt freshman Cheyenne Sprecher tallied her fourth shutout of the season and made three saves. Redshirt sophomore Abby Lucas made her first appearance of the season in goal, notching 10:18 of playing time.
The Huskies are back on the road next weekend to face No. 15 Old Dominion Friday at 5 p.m. and William & Mary Sunday at noon.
