HOUSTON - The UConn women's soccer team scored a pair of second half tallies but ultimately dropped its first conference game of the season, 3-2, to Houston at Carl Lewis International Complex.
UConn was outshot 13-6 in the first 45 minutes of the match and trailed the Cougars 1-0 heading into halftime. The Huskies flipped a switch in the second half and created numerous opportunities on the offensive end.
The Huskies evened the game in the 53rd minute on the first goal of the season for senior Elena Santos. Senior Heidi Druehl set up the goal with a free kick from just inside the midfield stripe. Druehl sailed her kick into a crowd of players inside the box and junior Erin Spillane was able to get a touch on it that bounced to Santos. The West Hartford, Conn. native was able to capitalize and made it a 1-1 game.
The score did not remain tied for long. The Cougars quickly came back with a goal in the 58th mintute and added an insurance goal in the 84th minute. Â
UConn would not go quietly. The Huskies crept closer with a goal from Izzy Lynch on a deflection at the near post on a free kick from Kim Urbanek. Urbanek played a short ball that Lynch came over and was able to get a touch at a tough angle that got past the keeper.
The Huskies had a couple chances to tie the game moments later when Urbanek lined up for a pair of corner kicks. The senior placed a perfect ball into a pack of players that nearly found the back of the net but was cleared out of bounds.Â
UConn was outshot 26-15 to close out the evening while dropping to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in the American. UConn has a couple recovery days before playing SMU in Dallas on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m.
