NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Natalie Snodgrass's golden goal with just over a minute remaining in overtime led the UConn women's hockey team to a 4-3 win over the Merrimack Warriors Saturday afternoon at Lawler Rink. UConn improves to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in Hockey East play. Merrimack drops to 2-4-1 on the year, 0-4-1 in league play.
Two other Huskies found the back of the net in addition to Snodgrass – senior Briana Colangelo paced the Huskies with two goals and sophomore Danika Pasqua added one of her own. Sophomore netminder Samantha Carpentier-Yelle collected 24 saves in net and earned her third win of the season.
The Huskies got the scoring going early with Pasqua's tally coming less than two minutes into the game. The sophomore tipped in Emily Reid's shot from the point to put UConn up 1-0 at the 1:17 mark. UConn doubled its lead when Colangelo added a tip-in of her own in the 15'.
Merrimack's Mikyla Grant-Mentis put one on the board late in the first and added her second tally in the 5' of the second period to tie the game at two.
Colangelo put the Huskies back in front, 3-2, with her second goal of the game. Freshman Kaitlyn Yearwood found Colangelo in front of the net and the senior sent one past the glove of Lea-Kristine Demers to give UConn a one-goal lead at 12:31.
The home team answered the bell quickly, leveling the score at 3-3 in the 15' following Kate Bukolska's short-handed goal. No team found the back of the net in the third frame and the teams headed to overtime.
After nearly four minutes of the overtime period had elapsed and a few close calls from both sides, it was Snodgrass who had the last laugh. The junior gathered up the puck, skated out to the point and fired a shot on goal that slipped past Kristine-Demers and across the goal-line to give UConn the 4-3 road win.
