COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Redshirt sophomore Cheyenne Sprecher made eight saves, including seven in the second half, as the No. 3 UConn field hockey team (10-2) fell to No. 4 Maryland (11-1), 2-0, Sunday afternoon.
UConn held a 4-1 advantage in shots in the first quarter. The game started on a high note for the Huskies as head coach Nancy Stevens won a coach's challenge video review and UConn was awarded a penalty corner less than two minutes into the contest.
Both of Maryland's goals came in the second quarter off deflections.
UConn was able to get a shot in the third quarter, but Sprecher made four big saves to keep the score 2-0.
Maryland led in shots, 13-10. The Huskies held a narrow 3-2 advantage in corners.
UConn is back in action next weekend in Storrs. The Huskies face Providence Friday at 3 p.m. The game was previously scheduled for a 6 p.m. start, but has been moved up due to concerns over mosquito-borne virus EEE.
