CHARLESTON, S.C. – Josh Carlton scored 16 points and pulled down five rebounds, Christian Vital added 14 points and five rebounds of his own, and the UConn men's basketball team used a balanced attack to coast to an 80-55 victory over Miami Sunday afternoon in the third-place game of the Charleston Classic. UConn improves to 4-2 overall while Miami drops to 4-3.
In addition to the aforementioned Carlton and Vital, the Huskies' balanced offensive attack featured two more double figure scorers. Brendan Adams and James Bouknight combined for 26 points, as both players contributed 13 points, respectively.
The Huskies and Hurricanes were engaged in a tightly contested game through the first 15 minutes of the half as neither team was able to gain much of an edge. UConn took a 30-25 lead after Vital knocked down a jumper, but Miami's Sam Waardenburg responded with a layup on the other end to trim the UConn lead back to three. The Huskies would grab all the momentum as they closed the half on a 6-0 run. Isaiah Whaley scored a layup inside, Bouknight knocked down two shots of his own and the Huskies took a 36-27 lead into the locker room.
UConn took complete control in the second half and opened up a 55-40 advantage at the 12:09 mark following Adams' transition three.
Harlond Beverly knocked down a three to cut the UConn lead to 10 but that was as close as the Hurricanes would get for the remainder of the game.
Sidney Wilson's dunk capped a 9-0 run that helped the Huskies open up a 19-point lead. UConn would coast the rest of the way, knocking off their second power-five conference opponent of the season and grabbing an 80-55 win.
