MBB Hosts NJIT to Close Out 2019

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's basketball team, which has won five of its last six games, completes the 2019 portion of its 2019-20 season with a non- conference game against a first-time opponent, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, at the XL Center in Hartford. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. tipoff and will be televised by SNY.

What to Know
- Sunday's game will be the first ever meeting between UConn and NJIT.
- The Huskies (8-3) are coming off a pre-Christmas 88-62 victory over New Hampshire one week ago in Hartford.
- UConn has four double-figure scorers, led by senior Christian Vital (13.5), who also leads the team in rebounding (7.6). Junior Josh Carlton is second in both scoring (11.2) and rebounding (7.2), while junior Tyler Polley (10.4) and redshirt junior Alterique Gilbert also average double-figures. Gilbert is also tops in assists (4.8), while redshirt freshman Akok Akok is the leader in blocked shots (2.9).
- NJIT (3-9), out of the Atlantic Sun Conference, is coming off a 74-46 home win over Division III Kean University last Sunday. Junior guard Zach Cooks leads the Highlanders and ranks sixth in the country in scoring (23.1), while sophomore Souleymane Diakite is the team's top rebounder (9.1) and senior Shyquan Gibbs leads in assists (2.4).
Leading the Pack
Dan Hurley begins his second season as head coach of the UConn men's basketball team. Hurley became the 19th head coach in the history of UConn men's basketball on March 22, 2018. Prior to his hiring, he spent two seasons at Wagner College and six at the University of Rhode Island, and owns a collegiate coaching record of 167- 122 (.578). Hurley made two consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (2016-17, 2017-18) and was named the 2017-18 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.
