PROVIDENCE, R.I. – UConn netminder Morgan Fisher sent back all 26 Providence shots for her second shutout of the season and freshman Kaitlyn Yearwood notched her first career goal as the Huskies came away with a 1-0 victory over the Friars Thursday night at Schneider Arena. The teams will square off tomorrow night at 6:00 at the Freitas Ice Forum in the return game of this weekend's home-and-home series.
Fisher had 12 of her 26 saves come in the final period, helping the Huskies protect a 1-0 lead and become the first team to shutout Providence this season.
UConn moves to 9-7-1 overall, 6-3-1 in Hockey East play while Providence falls to 8-7-2 and 5-5-0 in league action.
After a scoreless first period where the Huskies outshoot the Friars 10-7, Yearwood lit the lamp for UConn early in the second. The freshman defenseman's snipe from the right point rifled its way through traffic, over the shoulder of Clare Minnerath and into the back of the net to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead at the 1:51 mark.
The third period saw Providence outshoot UConn 12-4 as they looked for the equalizer but Fisher stood tall. The Friars called a timeout with 1:57 left and pulled Minnerath for an extra skater, but to no avail. The Huskies slammed the door on Providence, as Fisher stopped three shots down the stretch while Tristyn Svetek and Taylor Wabick added a block apiece to secure the win.
