CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UConn baseball team looks to carry momentum from opening weekend into a three-game set against the College of Charleston Cougars. The Cougars enter the weekend with a 4-0 record after sweeping UNC-Asheville last weekend and knocking off Charleston Southern in the midweek.
History vs. College of Charleston... UConn is 2-1 all-time against the Cougars. The last time the Huskies played College of Charleston was in 2013.
Conor David capped a five-run first inning with a three run homer. Jordan Tabakman fired 4.0 scoreless innings of relief and the Huskies won 9-4.
Gozzo Goes Gonzo... Redshirt sophomore Paul Gozzo came off the bench on Opening Night after starting catcher Pat Winkel hurt his hamstring. In his first career at-bat at UConn, Gozzo hit a go-ahead, solo home run in the eighth inning to lift the Huskies to a win vs. No. 4 Louisville.
Reliable Relievers... The UConn bullpen was excellent in its three game series against No. 4 Lousville. The Husky relievers logged 15.2 innings, allowed just four runs while striking out 16.
Jake Wallace closed out two games in 3.1 innings, he did not allow a hit or walk a batter and struck out three. CJ Dandeneau fired 2.2 scoreless innings on Sunday to preserve a Huskies series win.
Knocking Off No. 4... The Huskies secured a series win against No. 4 ranked Louisville on opening weekend in Lakeland, Fla. It was the first time under head coach Jim Penders that the Huskies had taken a series against a top-5 team. It was the first time since 2001 that the Huskies knocked off a top-5 opponent (No. 1 Notre Dame).
Power Conference Dubs... The Huskies improved to 61-47 since 2010 against teams currently in "Power 5" Conferences. Wins include Clemson, Louisville, Texas, Oregon State, Texas Tech and Oklahoma.
MacDonald's All-Americans... UConn has had a ton of success on the mound under eighth year pitching coach Josh MacDonald. The Huskies have had four-straight seasons with an All-American on the mound and five total since 2015. Carson Cross ('15), Anthony Kay ('16), John Russell ('17), Mason Feole ('18) and P.J. Poulin ('18) all earned All-America honors under Coach Mac. Coach MacDonald is the only pitching coach in the country that has done that with his current program.
