BSB Captures Series Opener, 7-4

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The UConn baseball team defeated College of Charleston, 7-4, in the opening game of its three-game series with the Cougars.
The Huskies (3-1) received another solid outing from starting pitcher Jeff Kersten who notched his first win of the season. The right-hander dealt 5.2 innings, allowed three runs and picked up four strikeouts. The Pinole, Calif. native went through a stretch of retiring 11 batters in a row until walking the leadoff batter in the sixth.
UConn trailed 1-0 after one but Christian Fedko immediately responded with a solo home run to left field to kick off the second. It was the second home run of the season for the sophomore and the Gibsonia, Pa. native has homered in back-to-back games.
The Huskies took the lead for good in the third with a four-run frame. John Toppa cashed in a bases-loaded walk and Chris Winkel shot a two-run single into left field. Winkel collected three hits in the contest including a pair of doubles.
CJ Dandeneau fired 2.0 innings out of the pen and allowed one unearned run while striking out a pair. After a pair of errors in the seventh inning, Dandeneau picked up a strikeout on a breaking ball in the dirt and redshirt sophomore Paul Gozzo fired down to first to pick off the runner and end the inning.
Anthony Prato notched his third multi-hit game with a three-hit effort on Friday. The UConn shortstop provided insurance for the Huskies with an RBI double in the seventh.
Jake Wallace collected his third save of the season by locking down the final four outs of the ballgame.
Notes
Jake Wallace has thrown 4.2 scoreless innings to open the 2019 season. Wallace has yet to allow a hit in three appearances.
Christian Fedko has homered in back-to-back games and leads the team with two long balls this season. The sophomore hit one home run in his freshman campaign.
Anthony Prato recorded his first three-hit game of the season and third multi-hit effort, overall.
CJ Dandeneau has allowed zero earned runs in his last two appearances, spanning 4.2 innings.
