Huskies Can't Close Out Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The UConn baseball team led 3-1 entering the seventh inning but could not close out the game, losing to Virginia, 6-3, at Davenport Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Colby Dunlop was excellent on the mound with a season-high 5.1 innings allowing just a pair of hits and striking out four. The right-hander exited the game with the Huskies ahead 3-1.
Chris Winkel gave UConn the lead in the second inning with his second home run of the year; a three-run shot that cleared the right field fence. Winkel leads the team with 19 runs batted in on the season.
The Huskies had a prime opportunity to tack on to their 3-0 advantage in the third inning with the bases loaded and no outs. However, a pick off at first base followed by a double play, later in the inning, resulted in no runs coming across in the frame.
The UConn offense mustered just four hits, becoming only the second time this season that the Huskies recorded less than seven hits in a game.
Virginia scored two runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to take control of the game. It was the first time this season the Huskies lost when leading after six innings.
Up next, the Huskies open American Athletic Conference play with a three-game series at Houston beginning on Friday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m. ET
