Huskies Conclude Spring Trip with UNF Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The UConn men's track & field team wrapped up their spring break trip on Friday with select athletes competing at the UNF Invitational at Hodges Stadium, the site of this spring's NCAA East Regional meet.
After taking off the indoor season, sophomore Safir Scott (Greenwich, Conn.) came out and won the high jump and turned in a jump that matched his best from last season. Scott topped the field by clearing a height of 2.12 meters (6'11.5"), matching his jump at last year's AAC outdoor championship which landed him second.
Senior Sebastian Catano (Cresskill, N.J.) returned to competition after sitting out the indoor season and opened the spring by taking second in the hammer with a heave of 52.90 meters (173'6")
Husky sophomore Devon McShane (Madison, Conn.) had his first chance to vault outdoors and took home his first career victory, clearing the bar at the height of 4.74 meters (15'7") to top the field. Junior Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.) was fifth with a height of 4.45 meters (14'7.25"), a new personal best height in the event, indoor or outdoors.
Senior Malik Snead (Trenton, N.J.) got his first chance to compete outdoors since the 2017 outdoor season and took third in the long jump with a leap of 7.28 meters (23'10.75"). Sophomores Todd Stueber (Toms River, N.J.) and Matthew Brady (Biddeford, Maine) went fifth and sixth in the shot put. Steuber recorded his best-ever throw outdoors, with a toss of 16.97 meters (55'8.25"). Brady, who is competing outdoors after taking the indoor season and last spring off, had a throw of 16.25 meters (53'3.75"). Stueber also took seventh in the discus, with a throw of 44.68 meters (146'7").
On the track, The UConn contingent in the 5,000 meters capped off the event with senior Kyle Brackman (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) taking first place with a time of 14:40.51. Classmate Michael McGonnigle (New Fairfield, Conn.) was right on his tail in second place, clocking in at 14:44.59. Sophomore Eric Van Der Els (Norwalk, Conn.) was fourth at 14:51.26.
Sophomore Tyler Gleen (Norwalk, Conn.) saw his first action of the spring and ran in the 1,500 meters taking fifth place in the field with a time of 4:01.62, a new personal best time. Junior Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.) returned after sitting out indoor season and ran the 400 meter hurdles in a new personal best time of 53.33 seconds to finish fourth. Freshman Wellington Ventura (Cresskill, N.J.) was seventh at 54.15 seconds.
In the 110 meter hurdles, freshman Konstantin Rust, coming off a strong indoor campaign, took fourth place with a time of 14.41 seconds.
The Huskies return to action next weekend next weekend when they return to the Sunshine State to take part in the Florida Relays at the University of Florida.
