HOUSTON – The UConn baseball team earned a series win at Houston after defeating the Cougars, 9-3, on Sunday afternoon at Schroeder Park. The Huskies moved to 13-8 overall and 2-1 in American Athletic Conference play.
Mike Woodworth led the way with a four-hit effort that included a pair of home runs. The UConn centerfielder is the first Husky to hit multiple home runs in a game since fellow Californian Joe Deroche-Duffin did it twice in 2016 against Holy Cross (April 27) and Northeastern (May 11).
The Huskies jumped on the board in the first inning on an RBI single to score Woodworth. Toppa finished the day with a 2-3 performance that included a run scored and stolen base.
After the Cougars tied the game on a solo homer in the second, the Huskies exploded for five runs in the third to take a 6-1 lead. Christian Fedko got the scoring going on a two-strike RBI double that scored Anthony Prato.
After Cole Brodnansky and Thad Phillips notched RBIs on ground balls that the Cougars couldn't handle, Chris Winkel provided a big blow with a two-run double to right center. It was the second two-bagger of the day for the older Winkel brother.
Jimmy Wang made his second career start for the Huskies and fired 4.1 innings, allowing just four hits, three runs, no walks and struck out three batters. The UConn bullpen took it the rest of the way and did not allow a run.
Colby Dunlop picked up is second win of the season with 1.1 scoreless innings. Caleb Wurster retired all three batters he faced and the duo of CJ Dandeneau and Jake Wallace combined to throw 2.1 scoreless innings.
Up next, the Huskies head home and are slated for a Tuesday, March 26 home opener vs. Hartford at 3 p.m. at J.O. Christian Field. 2019 marks the final season at J.O. Christian Field for the Huskies.
