BSB Wins Home Opener, 12-4

STORRS, Conn. – After 21 games on the road, the UConn baseball team came home for its home opener at J.O. Christian Field and defeated the University of Hartford, 12-4. The home opener kicked off the 51st and final season at J.O. Christian before the team moves across the road into their new ballpark. UConn moves to 14-8 overall and have won 10 of its last 13 contests.
The Huskies jumped on the Hawks with a seven-run second inning to create some distance, early. It seven runs was the most scored in an inning for UConn this season. Paul Gozzo, Mike Woodworth, John Toppa and Christian Fedko all had run-scoring doubles in the frame.
Woodworth stayed hot at the plate with four RBIs on the day while Anthony Prato drove in a pair during a two-hit day for the UConn shortstop.
Kenny Haus earned his second win of the season behind five strong innings of work. The Palos Verdes, Calif. native allowed just three hits, one run, did not give up a walk and struck out a career-high four batters.
Angus Mayock came out of the pen and threw 2.0 innings with one hit allowed, zero walks and three punch-outs.
Jake Sanderson made his UConn debut with 1.0 inning of work that featured his first career strikeout and Avery Santos closed out the win with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Next up, the Huskies remain home to take on Boston College on Wednesday, March 27 at 3 p.m.
