BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The UConn women's track and field team was represented by the duo of senior Susan Aneno and Divine Oladipo at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Day One housed the 800 Meter Preliminaries as well as the Trials and Finals for the Shot Put. In the 800 Meters, Aneno took on 15 of the top student-athletes from Norfolk State, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Texas Georgia, Boise State, Miami, Kansas, Monmouth, Penn, Penn State, Indiana, MTSU, and a pair from LSU. Oladipo also squared off against 15 of the nation's top shot putters from Arizona State, Stanford, Alabama, a pair from UCLA, Ohio State, Indiana, Bowling Green, a pair from North Dakota State, Colorado State, NC State, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.
Oladipo will cap off her most successful indoor season as a Husky will a 16.29m effort (53-51/2) to finish eleventh overall. Leading up to this opportunity to showcase her tremendous 2019 indoor campaign, Oladipo was just named a 2019 ECAC/IC4A individual champion after taking home gold back-to-back through four consecutive meets. She has also broke the school record in the shot put event back at the Scarlet & White Invite where she tossed a 16.88m (55'4.75") effort. The junior reclaimed her championship title a few weeks back at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships after winning it her freshman season of 2017. She was named Second Team All-American.
Aneno was placed in lane six of the second heat. She proceeded to take first in her heat with a time of 2:05.55, which is the fastest time of any student-athlete in the 800 Meter Prelims. Aneno was the intermediate leader through the 400 meters, 600 meters and on to finish the race. Since the top eight advance—top three of each heat plus the next two best times—she will irrefutably advance to the finals on Saturday, March 9th at 5:30 p.m. Susan's splits were 29.13—200m, 32.30/1:01.42—400m, 32.59/1:34.01—600m, and 31.54/2:05.55—800m.
"Susan had an excellent race today, she executed on a very high level and was able to put herself into a position to compete in the finals for the national championship. She was the fastest qualifier among an extremely talented field. I am looking forward to seeing her contend tomorrow in the 800 Meters. Tomorrow is a new day and I am sure she will do her best to garner All-American honors."
